A: The number of wolves killed each year for fur is primarily dictated by the Fashion Industry. As many as 1,200 wolves have been killed a year in Ontario for the commercial sale of their pelts.

Q: Isn't wolf trapping regulated?
A: Any Ontario resident can buy a trapping licence. There are no quota restrictions or seasons. You can snare or trap as many wolves as you like all year round.

Q: Are there any alternatives to the snare for trapping wolves?
A: According to the Fur Institute of Canada, in a publication made possible by Environment Canada: “No effective quick-killing trap has as yet been devised for the larger predators (wolves, coyotes, lynx and foxes).

Q: What is the value of the fur industry to native people?
A: There are approximately 16,000 trappers in Ontario, 19% of which are native. Average earnings for a Canadian trapper range between $428.57- $1,062.50 /year. For many, trapping is a part-time job, supplementing income from other sources.
